As summer’s warmth lingers and autumn quietly settles in, Tropical North Queensland remains a lush paradise, alive with the rhythm of flowing water. Here, the season doesn’t strip the trees bare; instead, it breathes fresh life into the rainforest, unfurling new leaves in every shade of green. The summer rains soften but don’t disappear, their gentle retreat leaving behind full rivers, glistening foliage, and waterfalls that remain at their most mesmerising.

In the tropics, autumn is not about endings - it’s about renewal. Raindrops replace fallen leaves, dappling the rainforest in a pearlescent shimmer.  The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and blooming flora, the atmosphere humming with the quiet rush of water. This is the time to slow down, step into nature’s embrace, and chase waterfalls at their most spectacular.

The Best Waterfalls to Chase

For sheer exhilaration, nothing compares to standing in the spray of a thundering waterfall. With more vertical waterways than almost anywhere else in Australia, Tropical North Queensland is a paradise for waterfall lovers.

Barron Falls

One of the most powerful waterfalls in the region, Barron Falls is at its peak in autumn. The continued rains ensure a breathtaking display, with torrents of water cascading down the rugged escarpment.

The Waterfall Circuit

The Atherton Tablelands boasts a dedicated Waterfall Circuit featuring Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa Falls. Millaa Millaa is a particularly famous swimming spot, offering a refreshing dip surrounded by lush rainforest.

Millstream Falls

Located near Ravenshoe, Queensland’s highest town, Millstream Falls holds the title of Australia’s widest single-drop waterfall. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, particularly after the wet season’s replenishing rains.

Tucked away in the savannah woodlands of the Atherton Tablelands, Emerald Creek Falls is a unique contrast to the region’s dense rainforest cascades. The waterfall tumbles over granite boulders into a series of clear, refreshing pools, perfect for a cooling dip.

Stoney Creek Falls

A highlight of the Kuranda Scenic Railway journey, this waterfall provides a breathtaking photo stop as the train crosses the bridge spanning its cascading waters.
